Inspired by the principle of working with nature rather than against it, we have developed the Smart Eco‑Sandbag: a revolutionary flood management solution that combines circular economy materials, lightweight design, and real‑time IoT monitoring.
Each sandbag is made for a improved waterproofing and structural stability. Compared to traditional sandbags, our product is lighter, enabling rapid deployment with less labour. Once cured, the material forms a solid, non‑toxic block that does not leak or scatter even if the outer bag is damaged – eliminating the pollution caused by conventional sandbags.
To move beyond passive flood control, each Smart Eco‑Sandbag integrates an embedded IoT sensor module (pressure, humidity, accelerometer and LoRa communication). These sensors continuously monitor the sandbag’s status: pressure changes indicate shifting or overloading; humidity sensors detect leaks; accelerometers report displacement by floodwater. All data are transmitted wirelessly to a cloud‑based command centre, creating a real‑time “flood resilience heat map” and enabling early warning before failures occur.
The sandbag also follows circular economy principles. After use or when damaged, it can be crushed and re‑manufactured into new sandbags, closing the material loop. This nature‑aligned, intelligent flood defense system not only reduces waste and carbon footprint but also transforms emergency response from reactive sandbagging into proactive, data‑driven flood management.
