RiceFort Upcycled Homes is a social impact project by RiceFort Limited, Hong Kong’s first bio-based materials innovator. We create furniture for residents of Good House, Tai Po’s transitional housing, targeting families in cramped subdivided flats. Using rice husk waste, an abundant agricultural by-product, we upcycle it into durable RiceFort Fiberboard for space-saving pieces like cabinets, desks, and partitions tailored to tiny homes.

Hong Kong’s humid subtropical climate challenges low-income housing resilience: persistent moisture breeds mold and attracts termites, rapidly degrading standard wood furniture and worsening health risks in poorly ventilated spaces. RiceFort Fiberboard directly counters these threats. It offers exceptional termite and decay resistance, far surpassing conventional materials, while its low water absorption prevents swelling and mold growth even in high humidity. The board’s robust structure ensures long-lasting performance without warping. Additionally, it emits minimal volatile organic compounds, providing safer indoor air quality for vulnerable families—free from harmful chemicals like formaldehyde.

This approach not only enhances climate resilience but also embraces circular economy principles. By transforming waste rice husks into eco-friendly boards, we cut reliance on fossil-based materials, lower carbon emissions, and deliver lightweight, naturally textured furniture with a pleasant plant-like fragrance. Our process—from sorting and grinding husks to hot-pressing—yields practical products ready for community delivery.

Through RiceFort Upcycled Homes, we empower 2 low-income households in Phase 1, outfitting their transitional homes with resilient, dignified living solutions. This fosters stability, improves daily life, and sets a model for sustainable housing in humid urban environments.
