Co-Breeze: 3-in-1 Convection-Filtration Dehumidification System with Smart Technology
Hong Kong's subdivided flat residents face a silent crisis. With humidity levels reaching 90%, cramped spaces with no cross-ventilation trap heat and moisture. Toxic mold breeds freely, triggering respiratory diseases in children and the elderly. Yet conventional solutions remain out of reach. Electric dehumidifiers cost over HK$2,000 on average and air conditioners demand overcharged electricity rates, while passive moisture boxes are simply too ineffective for such extreme micro-climates. Strict tenancy rules prohibiting drilling further eliminate installation-based alternatives. This is a public health and energy equity crisis affecting Hong Kong's most vulnerable communities.
Co-Breeze is an ultra-low-cost dehumidifier engineered specifically for small-sized rooms. Built on a reverse-engineered desktop air cooler chassis, it combines a HEPA filter, silicon dioxide dessicator, and a fan for forced convection. Together, these three layers actively draw damp air from stagnant corners, extract moisture through physical reaction, and trap mold spores. all consuming under 5W. With low-cost replaceable dessicator, it bridges the gap between ineffective passive boxes and unaffordable electric dehumidifiers.
Beyond hardware, Co-Breeze aims to raise public awareness of the overlooked climate realities faced by subdivided flats’ tenants. Through NGO partnerships, community workshops, and future IoT-enabled air quality data, the project makes invisible environmental hazards visible, by turning a personal appliance into a platform for social advocacy and systemic change.
