Herbal Pest Resilience Refills: Natural, Low-Carbon Pest Control Solution

Herbal Pest Resilience Refills is an eco-innovation initiative developed by define CLEAN to address a critical yet overlooked challenge facing Hong Kong's most vulnerable urban residents: pest infestations in Pest-related challenges in senior living communities. As climate change intensifies heat and humidity in dense neighbourhoods like Aberdeen, mosquito and pest breeding conditions worsen — posing growing health risks such as dengue fever, skin infections, and lung-related disease, particularly among elderly residents who spend more time at home and face greater barriers accessing commercial pest control.

Conventional pesticide products are not only chemically harmful but rely on single-use plastic bottles manufactured and transported at significant carbon cost. define CLEAN replaces this model with a refillable, plant-derived herbal brick — formulated from natural ingredients such as citronella, lemongrass, eucalyptus, and neem — proven effective against mosquitoes and household pests. The refill system eliminates single-use plastic waste entirely and achieves up to 98% reduction in carbon emissions compared to traditional chemical alternatives. All ingredients are naturally sourced and validated through SGS and CMA testing, ensuring both safety and efficacy.

The project targets 40 SDU households across a 2-month pilot phase in partnership with community organisations, making and distributing subsidised refill kits in community center. Hands-on community workshops educate residents — with a focus on elderly occupants — on proper product use, pest prevention strategies, and the links between climate change and household health risks.

Backed by a multidisciplinary team with expertise in environmental sustainability, chemical R&D, and supply chain management, Herbal Resilience Refills presents a scalable, community-centred model that simultaneously reduces environmental impact, protects public health, and empowers vulnerable households to build long-term climate resilience.
